Chanukah: A Winter Festival
Both Chanukah and Purim take place during the winter, when the days are cold and short, when night comes early, when the ground sleeps and freezes.
Chanukah and Purim are holidays of exile, of the night, when the Greeks attempted to destroy Israel spiritually and the Persians plotted to destroy Israel physically. They provide flickers of light and hope in an otherwise bleak terrain. |
