One of the requirements of the Chanukah lights is that they cannot be placed lower than 10 tefachim, handbreadths (approximately 3.15 inches) off the ground.
What is this special requirement of the Chanukah lights? What is behind this requirement?
The Imrei Emes, the third Rebbe of the Gerer Dynasty, writes: [It is known that] the Shechina, Divine Presence, does not descend [to Earth] less than 10 tefachim. In the Future however, the Shchina will rest upon the world, even at the lowest places on Earth (even among the weakest individuals of the Jewish people). This is suggestive of the requirement not to place the Menorah under 10 tefachim, since the Chanukah lights represent the Future Era, when the light of Moshiach will shine and G-d will remove idols from the earth, [so that] the false deities will be utterly cut off, to perfect the world under the sovereignty of the Almighty…. And it is said: “God shall be King over the entire earth. On that day, God will be one, and His name, one.” Therefore the Chanukah candles should not be lit less than 10 tefachim off the ground. |
